Management today has become increasingly complex. Newer types of businesses
and changes in style have become a topic of great importance. The rapidly
changing business climate, global competition and the need for a high level
of functioning in organizations has created an enormous challenge for managers.
Unfortunately, the traditional model for change, which calls for managing
resistance, creating consensus and planning and controlling the change
process is not working very effectively. Change that is imposed on employees
by upper management has been found to cause a significant level of resistance
and creates a vicious cycle that often stops the intended changes completely.
Internal problems may be the source of new and more effective structures
trying to develop that deserve attention. When such issues are ignored,
downplayed or addressed by using temporary solutions, deeper and more significant
problems may develop that may be much harder to understand and resolve.
Modern science in the area of organizational change has found that self-organization comes from allowing and even amplifying unpredictable events and differences rather than trying to control or negate them. By stimulating change from within an organization, it has been documented that significant structural improvements and a more effective workforce will occur. Interestingly, the origin of these modern concepts and new insights on change can be traced to the ancient Chinese classic, the I Ching, or Book of Changes.
